Possibly, the most characteristic images of Minorca are the TAULAS. Formed by two thick slabs of carved stone, one of them is embedded in the ground and supports the other one which rests horizontally on top.. This monument usually occupies a circular enclosure surrounded by thick pilasters. Some authors consider that the TAULAS had a religious character, some others think that the simply are the central pillar over which slabs of stone would have covered the circular enclosure.

Two of the most well known Taulas on the island are found in the district of Ciutadella, "TORRE TRENCADA" standing in the Camí Vell de Maó, in which burials excavated in the ground can be observed and the one in "TORRE LLAFUDA", not far from the former one, but with acces from the road to Maó 8 km. from Ciutadella. Both of them are found in areas which deserve a visit.
