Several defense towers are found in the Ciutadella area.The following pages show the most well-known ones.
The towers were built to defend the town from attacks by pirates and rebels and to prevent possible invasions.They were built in strategic positions, some were situated at the mouth of the harbour to defend the entrance of the town, others were built to enable alarm signals to be sent from one part to another part of the island and when the weather was good ,even to Majorca. Some others like the Torre d'en Quart were built inland and were used to warn the farmers working in the fields so that they could leave their chores and take up arms to defend the island against the moorish pirates.
